Bali Between the Lines
Client
Heinemann
Brief
Heinemann wants their tender proposal for Bali International Airport designed in the style of a coffee table book.
Insight
Travellers from around the world know Bali for its sunny beaches, good food and resorts. There is a lot more to Bali than just that.
Idea
Showing that there is more to Bali than meets the eye.
Creative Rationale
Bali’s beaches and resorts enthrals travellers near and far. Gazing a little closer between the lines, you could say that Bali holds a veil of mystery. The beauty of Bali comes from its spirituality, culture, and artistic traditions.
An island filled with exuberance and mystical wonder, the balance between mysticism and vibrance that day and night brings respectively represents Bali. Studying the form and architecture of Bali’s Airport in congruence with traditional buildings gave life to this concept.
Visual References
Book Slipcase Packaging
The slipcase design draws inspiration from the ceiling structure of Bali airport. Tying this in with the silhouette of Bali island, a smart visual play on “Bali Between the Lines” is created.
Book Cover
The book cover showcases a bespoke illustration of Bali’s iconic structures in a mono-line treatment, similar to that of the book packaging. Expanding on the magical experience of being in Bali and reading between the lines, the book cover’s visual language could be said to mimic that of a classic fairytale book, with its own unique twist.
Sporting a gold foil hot-stamp on a fabric hardcover book, this book cover marries premier with magical. The balance between mysticism and vibrance that day and night brings represents Bali. The rest of the book would go on to visualise the duality between this mysticism and vibrance in visual representation of day and night, using dark and light coloured pages.
